What Are Implant Dentures?
Traditional dentures work by using the shape and natural suction of your mouth to stay in place. Implant dentures stay in place through different means. This type of denture is instead supported by a series of small, screwlike implants that are surgically inserted into the jawbone for a strong foundation. Dental implants are usually made from titanium, which fuses to the jawbone in a process called “osseointegration,” allowing for additional stability, comfort, and longevity. There are two main types of implant dentures. During your consultation, we will discuss which of the following is ideal for you.
Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures
A fixed implant denture is made to stay in place at all times. It can only be removed by a dental professional. In most scenarios, four to six strategically placed dental implants are placed to hold a permanent denture. This is a preferred option for many patients because they act more like real teeth.
Removable Implant Dentures
Removable implant dentures, sometimes called “snap-on” dentures, are also held into place using dental implants. The difference is that they use clips or ball sockets to attach to them. This way, patients can take their dentures out as needed. This type of implant denture needs to be removed throughout the day for cleaning.
The Implant Denture Process
During your consultation, we will determine whether or not you are a good candidate for implant dentures. At this point, we can create a treatment plan that meets your needs. For some patients, preparatory procedures are needed before getting dental implants to improve the probability of success.
The dental implants are surgically placed into the jawbone. Then, they fuse to the surrounding bone tissue via the osseointegration process. This can take between three and six months. Next, metal connectors, called “abutments,” are placed on the end of the implants. Your final denture is designed and crafted according to your needs and secured into place by your dentist.
